Romans 8:1-5 paraphrase

Therefore, from now on, there is absolutely no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus and walk not according to the flesh but according to the spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has liberated you from the law of sin and death. For the law was powerless, weakened by human nature; and it was for this reason that God sent His Son, in the likeness of sinful flesh and because of sin, He condemned sin in the flesh. That the righteous requirements of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

Paraphrase of Philippians 3:7-14

For whatever I have valued as worth my attention in the past, I now consider everything WORTHLESS for the benefit of Christ. In fact, everything I considered important, I now view as NOTHING for the incomparable and excelling value of the experiential knowledge of Christ Jesus  my Lord; because of whom (through His death and resurrection) I have SUFFERED the loss of everything and regard it as EXCREMENT in order that I might (be emptier and) obtain more of Christ! Also, I hope to be found in him, not having a righteousness through my own vain attempts to keep the law, but I am referring to the true righteousness which only comes through faith in Christ—this righteousness is totally dependent on God through faith. It is my desire to know Him intimately—and to experience the power of his resurrection and to participate in His sufferings, so that I may more fully enter into His death. The entire goal is to be included in the resurrection from the grave. I do not mean to suggest that I have already obtained all I need or have already crossed the finish line, but I am actively pursuing (through faith) to obtain the claim of Christ Jesus on me. Listen, I am not assuming that I have achieved anything yet. But I have definitely forgotten what is behind me and my only concern is to keep leaning forward. Therefore, I am only pursuing the heavenly reward (eternal life)–the only objective of God IN (the death and resurrection of) Christ Jesus.

Colossians 3:1-10

If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. Therefore PUT TO DEATH YOUR MEMBERS which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, WHICH IS IDOLATRY. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them. But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

Paraphrase of Hebrews 12:1-3

Do you understand what these people of faith are encouraging us to be? It means that we need to become very focused as they were about faith. So, whatever is a barrier or keeps pulling us down–whether it is a person, possession, or any thing–is to be relinquished. You are in a race, which requires eliminating all which hinders you from winning. That means LIVING TO DO WHAT IS ESSENTIAL TO LIVING BY FAITH–doing only what is helpful and avoiding all that is harmful. It is to your advantage, THE MORE SIMPLE YOUR LIFE BECOMES. Keep your constant focus on Jesus–His death and resurrection–because He showed us how to live by faith, in total dependence upon God. Constantly consider how He resisted everything and all who were opposed to Him, so that you do not become discouraged and give up. He endured the shame and ugliness of the Cross–dying to do everything and now sits at the place of honor beside God. Let that always electrify your heart!

Romans 13:11-14 paraphrase

And do this, fully understanding the time, because it is already the hour to rise up from your death stupor; for now is our salvation nearer than when we first believed. The night is nearly over and the day is almost here. Therefore, we should cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. As it is customary for the daylight hours, we should be totally committed to no drunkenness or drinking of any kind, illicit intercourse or disgusting sensual behavior, not in arguing or relating negatively. Rather, get into (clothe , put on) the Lord Jesus Christ and do not even allow yourself to think about how to gratify the flesh.

Ephesians 4:17-24 paraphrase

Therefore, I declare for the Lord as strongly as I possibly can, you are no longer to direct your lives by the behavior of the Gentiles, as even their minds are futilely and fully engaged in decadence. Their thinking is in the dark and they are alienated from the life of God; their ignorance exists due to the hardness of their hearts. They have become callous and insensitive to the truth and have been given over to every immoral sensuality for the indulgence of every impurity to reveal their selfishness. But, you have not learned to live this way in Christ. If, indeed, you have heard and been taught in Him the truth as it is in Jesus. You put off according to your former way of life, the old man, which is being continually corrupted by the deceitfulness of desires.

Paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Have you not fully known that those running in a stadium race–all run with a purpose–but only one receives the prize? Similarly, keep on running that you might obtain it. Now, everyone competing in the contest is totally focused; they do it for a perishable crown, but we do so that we might receive an imperishable one. Consequently, I do not run without a purpose; I do not box an imaginary foe. I keep my body under submission and maintain a servant attitude in order that I might not be disqualified.

John 12:24, 25 paraphrase

I want to make this very clear, Unless a wheat seed falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone. However, if it should die, it bears much fruit. The one who loves their life loses it, and the one who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

John 7:37-39

Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

Colossians 1:9-14 paraphrase

We do not cease praying for you and asking God to fill you completely with the experiential  knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. Once and for all, ORDER EVERY ASPECT OF YOUR LIFE IN A MANNER THAT PLEASES THE LORD, bearing good fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. May each of you be strengthened according to all of His glorious might, in order to persevere with all patience and joy. Giving thanks to the Father who has revealed we qualify to share in the inheritance of the saints. Who has rescued us from the control of darkness and made us members of His kingdom because we are so loved by Him. In Him, we have redemption through the forgiveness of our sins.

Titus 3:1-8

Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work, to SPEAK EVIL OF NO ONE, to be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men. For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Philippians 4:8

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. (I use TNJ (for the medical dx) PLGR (for pilgrim) and VP to help me memorize)

1 Timothy 4:7, 8, 13-15

7 – “Keep on disciplining yourself toward godliness. For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. … give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. Meditate on these things; GIVE YOURSELF ENTIRELY TO THEM, that your progress may be evident to all.

Colossians 3:1-5 edited paraphrase

If therefore you have been raised up with Christ keep on seeking where Christ sits at the right hand of God. Constantly rivet your attention on what really matters above and not the things on earth. For you died, and your life has been hidden together with Christ in God. When Christ, Who is your life, is revealed, then you will appear with Him in glory. Therefore, put to death your members belonging to this earth: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness which causes you to worship the wrong things (idolatry).

Hebrews 10:19-25, A paraphrase

Therefore, fellow believers, having absolute confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, which He consecrated for us, a new and living way, through the veil, that is, by His flesh, and having a great priest over the house of God, we should draw near with a totally sincere heart and with the full assurance of faith, having our hearts cleansed from a guilty conscience, and having our bodies washed with pure water. We should hold firmly and resolutely to the profession of our hope, for He who promised is faithful. And we should carefully reflect how we may inspire one another on toward love and good works, not abandoning meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and doing so more urgently as you see the Day approaching.

Paraphrase of Romans 6

What then will we say? Will we remain in sin to enjoy the luxury of grace? May it never happen! How will we live in it, when we have died to sin? Do you not know that as many as have been baptized in Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore, we have been buried together with Him through baptism into death, just as Christ was raised up from among the dead by the glory of the father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have become united together in the likeness of His death, we will most certainly be in the likeness of His resurrection. Experientially knowing this that our old man was once-and-for all crucified along with Christ that the body of sin might be rendered inoperative that we are to be no longer slaves to sin. For the one who has died to sin has been freed from sin. So then, if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him. Fully knowing  that Christ having been raised up from the dead does not die again; death no longer rules over Him. So through His death to sin, He died once and for all, so that the life He lives, He lives for God. So you also, consider yourselves to be dead to sin and living to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore, do not allow sin to reign in your mortal body in order to obey the lusts of it. Do not surrender any part of your body to sin as an instrument of unrighteousness, but rather, surrender yourselves as being alive from the dead and your body parts as God’s instruments of righteousness. For sin will not rule over you, for you are not under law but grace. What then? Should we remain in sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never happen! Have you not fully known that whatever you surrender yourselves to be slaves and obey, you are slaves to whatever you obey, either of sin to death or of obedience to righteousness? But thanks to God you used to be (imperfect tense) slaves of sin but you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching delivered to you. But you have been set free from sin and you became slaves to righteousness. I am speaking of a human example, due to the weakness of your flesh. For just as you surrender your body parts in bondage to impurity and habitual lawlessness, even so now surrender your members in bondage. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free of righteousness. Therefore, what was the fruit of those things in which you are now ashamed? The obvious end of such activity is death. But, now, you have been set free (aorist tense), having become slaves to God. And the fruit of your behavior is unto holiness and leads toward eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Ephesians 5:15-18, a paraphrase

Continually be diligent in discerning how you conduct every aspect of your life–not as unwise but as wise. Making a wise and sacred use of every opportunity for doing good, because bad and evil things are going to happen.Because of this, do not act stupidly or impulsively, but CAREFULLY PERCEIVE what is the will of the Lord. Do not allow yourself to become drunk with wine, as it only leads to regrettable behavior. But, be completely filled up with the right Spirit.

Hebrews 4:11-13

Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

Philippians 2:5-11

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Philippians 2:12, 13

Continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him. Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.

1 Thessalonians 5:23, 24

Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.
